Animal Rescue League of Boston is established.

[2/9] Founded by Anna Clapp Harris Smith, it opens its first shelter at 66 Carver Street in April 1899. The first animal rescue organization in the U.S., its purpose is to provide for “the rescue and shelter of suffering homeless animals,” and its motto is “kindness Uplifts the World.” The organization is grew out of a letter to the editor of the Boston Evening Transcript by Harris in which she described acts of cruelty toward animals and called for establishing a shelter that received over 60 responses. Harris serves as its first president. A new shelter [second] opens on Chandler Street in 1956.*
